Transport Services

South Africa boasts an excellent road infrastructure. However, our public transport does leave some room for improvement. Our Gautrain (fast transit train) is not yet up and running, so we would be happy to advise you of other forms of transport.

A shuttle or taxi service can be arranged to get you to and from the O R Tambo International Airport at a nominal charge. Please organise this through Guest Relations.

Ferns Restaurant

This elegant restaurant offers patrons a selection of dining options. You can start the day here with a continental or full English breakfast – enjoyed at your own leisurely pace. A buffet or á la carte menu is available for both lunch and dinner, prepared with flair by our highly trained chefs. Look out for South African specialities on both menus, served up, of course, with the best of local wines.

Upper West Side Cafe and Bar

This friendly landmark is one of Johannesburg’s most popular meeting places, and for good reason. The establishment is perfect for all-day dining in a relaxed atmosphere. Vilamoura

Located on the ground floor of the Sandton Sun, this independently owned restaurant focuses on traditional Portuguese cuisine. The finest seafood is always on offer at Vilamoura. Open Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner.





Chefs’ Table
The Sandton Sun has become renowned for its Chef’s Tables. They take place in the “Heat of the Kitchen” and are hosted by our Executive Chefs Klaus Beckmann and James Khosa, along with our Sommelier who takes the guest’s on a journey of fine wines. The Chef’s Table can take between 12 and 16 people and is a unique way of entertaining. You can discuss your dining options with one of our Banqueting Ambassador’s.

Kosher
The Sandton Sun is able to cater for kosher guests and kosher functions. The hotel boasts its own kosher kitchen that adheres strictly to the regulations of the Beth Din. We use the services of specialist kosher caterers for all of our events.

Special Dietary requirements

Johannesburg Attractions - Out and About
As you’ll soon find out, Johannesburg is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. However, before you go too far a-field, remember there is so much to do right on the doorstep of the Sandton Sun. It’s a good idea to ask the advice of Ronnie Govender, the hotel’s erudite concierge. Having been with the hotel since it first opened 23 years ago, Ronnie, a veritable mine of information, is the man to speak to.

The following attractions are just a few minutes walk away from the Sandton Sun:

Mandela Square
Named after the Grandfather of the Nation, Nelson Mandela, this fantastic lifestyle destination offers a number of open-air eateries surrounding a sunny Italian piazza (square). There is a wide range of trendy stores to induce some serious shopping. Nelson Mandela Square is the place for long leisurely lunches and watching the passing parade.

Theatre on the Square
Enjoy some of South Africa’s freshest new theatre productions and musicals at The Theatre on the Square, found on the far corner of Nelson Mandela Square. Follow the performance with a nightcap in one of the enticing restaurants or wine bars. Ask the concierge desk for details about booking for the latest shows.

Sandton Convention Centre
The Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) is Africa’s largest and most prestigious multi-purpose exhibition and convention centre. Boasting state-of-the-art technical facilities this 22 000sqm building can accommodate up to 10 000 visitors at any time. Make enquiries about any interesting exhibitions or events taking place at the SCC during your stay.

Sandton City
This legendary mall has set the standard for world-class shopping centres in Africa. Boasting some 300 shops, Sandton City is located just metres away from the Sandton Sun. Enjoy the best of local and global fashion, seek out some fine antiques and African art, take in the latest feature film or enjoy a meal at any one of the restaurants on offer. A visit to Sandton would not be complete without trawling for treasure in this mega-mall.

TOURS AND EXCURSIONS
Our Ronnie Govender (or any of our informed concierge staff) will tell you that once you have explored the sights and sounds of Sandton, there are more fun attractions and activities in and around greater Johannesburg. Why not take a day-tour to Soweto, spend a few enlightening hours at the Apartheid Museum or journey into the countryside to seek out the beginnings of humankind.

Soweto:
Take a guided township tour of Soweto, one of South Africa’s most famous tourist attractions. Visit the Hector Pietersen Museum (a tribute to the Soweto uprisings of 1976) and the Nelson Mandela house museum on Vilakazi Street. This famous street is home to not one, but two Nobel Peace Prize winners. Why not lunch at one of the local restaurants and taste homegrown township cuisine for the first time.

An alternative township tour would be a trip to the township of Alexandra, just fifteen minutes away from Sandton.

Gold Reef City is a great excursion if you have a day to spare. This theme park is based on Johannesburg’s history of gold and replicates a 19th century gold mine and typical mining village. Underground tours are a major highlight. There are rides and games for the children, and for the adults there is a Vegas-style casino, a live-performance theatre, a reputable jazz bar and loads of good restaurants. The Apartheid Museum is located near this site too.

The Cradle of Humankind is about a 45-minute drive from the Sandton Sun and is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dry highveld region around Kromdraai and Sterkfontein boasts one of the world’s richest concentrations of hominid fossils. The caves at Sterkfontein have yielded a near-complete 3.3 million-year-old skeleton of early man. The visitor centre at Maropeng has many high-tech displays chronicling the subject and is worth a visit.
